Get Off Their Back: “The Prodigy” Mike Bennett

So, it’s been a while since I did this piece here on the Shark Attack, but there’s been something that has been going on that I feel I should address.  It was last year that we saw the debut of “The Prodigy” Mike Bennett in ROH.  During the course of his time in the company, one phrase that has been used during almost any match with this guy has been “You Can’t Wrestle.” Which leads me to this edition of “Get Off Their Back” with the topic being one Mike Bennett.

Now lately, a lot of guys have been talking about how the use of the word “buried” for a wrestler has been used inaccurately.  I think the same can be said in the phrase “you can’t wrestle.”  In the last ten years, the one time I can remember that phrase being accurate was with the old Team Canada stable and a certain muscle-head named A-1.  First off, I found his name to be so opposite of intimidating considering the guy was named after a steak sauce.  Plus, who did we ever see the guy beat? It was like the guy was nothing more than a human punching bag with muscles. Back on the subject of Mike Bennett, I don’t see how you can say that the guy can’t wrestle when there really isn’t one guy in that whole ROH roster that can’t wrestle. They all can wrestle, (repeat: ALL can wrestle) and all of them have their own style and it works and Bennett happens to be one of them.

You want to talk about how the guy is cocky and arrogant and full of himself? Um , Hello? He’s a heel and his character comes with him being that way. He’s doing his damn job and as far as his skills and people thinking he doesn’t have any skills in the ring, give me one good reason or one solid bit of proof that he can’t wrestle. Why? Just because he’s not a high flyer like El Generico or Jay Lethal?  He doesn’t have to be and not all the guys have to be that way in ROH.  Mike Bennett is a technical wrestler and there have been plenty of guys that are like that in wrestling, not just in ROH.  Kurt Angle, Dean Malenko, Arn Anderson, Chris Benoit (going by his ring work, not the circumstances around his death), Kevin Steen, Lance Storm, Davey Richards, Eddie Edwards and some others.  Not one of those guys are known as high-flyers and are simply viewed for their technical skills.

I’ve seen Bennett wrestle on ROH and I’ve seen his matches against guys like Steve Corino, Jimmy Jacobs and Jay Lethal and let me tell you that the phrase “This guy can’t wrestle for shit” doesn’t enter my mind for even a second.  To me, this guy the balance of the cocky & arrogant heel, powerhouse and lastly, mat technician.  He even goes to the ring with a manager in “Brutal” Bob Evans and do I really need to go into how the role of “managers” is almost all but extinct these days?

The heat that Bennett seems to get is not a heel kind of heat from the fans, and I honestly don’t get it.  I mean is it maybe that fans don’t like to be told or have shoved in front of them who is the “next big thing” or something like that?  Well, that didn’t stop people when Brock Lesnar was a wrestler and was dubbed as the Next Big Thing.  It’s part of the angle with Bennett and it’s part of his character so get over it already. Honestly, not only do I hope for this, but I want to see this guy with a belt just to see what he can really do when he’s sporting some championship gold.  I’m not talking tag team gold either, I want to see this guy with a belt on his own and not splitting it with somebody.

Like it or not, outside of Kevin Steen, Mike Bennett is in my opinion, somebody who not only can wrestle, but has the potential and ability to where he could be a top heel if not THE top heel in ROH, something that ROH is needing to set up right now.  So like it or not, this guy’s not going anywhere anytime soon and I for one am happy for that.

Get Off Their Back: Kelly Kelly

In this latest edition of Get Off Their Back, I say to all the forum boys and all the people that give the internet wrestling fans such a bad rap in the first place, I say about the WWE’s own Kelly Kelly “GET OFF HER BACK.”

Now, when she first came in, yes she was eye candy and was and still is easy on the eyes with a killer smile and comes off as a girl who is as sweet as they come.  So what? Trish Stratus came in and was pretty much eye candy and look what happened with her. She ended up being one of the greatest wrestlers in the Divas division.  And yet nobody is on her case.  Stacy Keibler and Torrie Wilson were never divas/women’s champion and were nothing more than eye candy, but nobody complains about them.

Contrary to what everybody thinks, Kelly Kelly has a few moves in her and can deliver emotion.  When they did the whole thing with her getting fired by Shrieking Fatass I mean Vickie Guerrero and seeing Kelly cry, I wanted to punch the TV and have something very bad happen to Vickie Guerrero.  And then smiling like a kid in Disneyland for the first time when Kelly was hired back and kicked the crud out of Vickie.

My problem with either of the Bellas holding the Divas title was that neither were that great at wrestling in terms of skill. Natalya can wrestle, Beth Phoenix can wrestle and Gail Kim can wrestle and so can Melina and to a degree Maryse.  And yet, the Bellas can’t do more than pull a switch with each other and yet Kelly Kelly has brushed up her skills and earned the belt.   And in case some of her haters hadn’t noticed, the crowd reacted pretty strong for her when she won the belt.  So the way I see it, judging by that reaction, people liked her winning the belt even if some of you haters of her didn’t

Bottom line, Kelly Kelly is now the new Diva’s Champion and the crowd likes it, myself included. So basically to all of you haters, you need to get used to it so once again I say to all the haters of Kelly Kelly: GET OFF HER BACK.

Get Off Their Back: Lacey Von Erich

In this first installment of a new segment of The Shark Attack entitled “Get Off Their Back,”  I’m gonna talk about the divas/knockouts or at least one in particular.  I’m talking about former TNA Knockout and Beautiful People member Lacey Von Erich. I’m sick and tired of having to hear crap poured on this girl whether it’s by the fans or Mark Madden the Super Jackass, especially Madden due to his “prostitution” references about Lacey.

She debuted with TNA after WWE gave her a shot in their training grounds only to cut her loose. She left TNA last year and a lot of people like Madden have made a big deal about her and her little “Matches” or custom matches, however you want to put it on ringdivas.com and Madden in his recent edition of rambling bile has to drool about her chest and complain about it being reduced.  To quote Peter Griffin from Family Guy; “Oh….My……God. Who The Hell Cares?”

I tackled into this about Lacey prior to writing this where I said how there is a couple things that work against her, despite how the crowd turns against her.

1) She’s a mom.  For any female wrestler, that’s gonna be difficult to work around for anyone.

2) She’s entering a business that despite whatever passion she has for it, it’s the same line of work that to a degree killed her father.   That’s a difficult thing for anybody to shake off, why should it be any different for her?

3) Nobody has seen a Von Erich in the ring in years, not since the death of her father Kerry Von Erich.  Try to imagine carrying that weight of being the first in the Von Erich family name that nobody has seen in almost 20+ years.

4) Clearly she has a very distinct, old school style of wrestling taught to her, probably from training with her uncle, the legendary Kevin Von Erich.  I mean the Von Erich Claw may be as sacred as the Sharpshooter is to the Hart family, but it doesn’t strike near the terror that it used to.

Seriously, as much as a lot of people go on about how only hot girls are hired to be Divas or Knockouts, truth is we use the same prejudice by thinking that a hot girl as a Diva or Knockout is a lost cause when it comes to wrestling skill.  Says who?  Just because they haven’t learned it doesn’t mean they’ll never learn it.   Look at Trish Stratus when she first came in. Nobody thought she’d ever be anything in the ring and she ended up being one of the reasons that the Divas division reached prominence at one point.  What we fail to accept is that learning skills like this in most cases takes time and unfortunately, much like the guys in charge of the wrestling companies, we’re impatient as hell.  As for her little internet matches, it’s not porno we’re talking about and maybe in some strange twist, maybe there’s less pressure on her than wrestling in a match where the crowd can’t stand you in the ring and chants “You Can’t Wrestle.”

As for Madden referring to her like she’s a prostitute, keep dreaming Fat Ass.  Until you see her take money from a guy and bangs him, or is seen on a edition of Real Sex or Red Shoe Diaries, you can’t call her a prostitute without sounding a like a horse’s ass for it. Personally I wish she was still in TNA because having her in TNA was a hell of a lot better than bringing in Angelina and J-Woww from Jersey Shore.   So once again, I say about Lacey Von Erich, GET OFF HER BACK!
